Tide Water Adaptive Aquatics Center
WHAT IS ADAPTIVE?
As one of very few places to offer swim programs specifically designed for children with challenges, Tide Water Adaptive Aquatics Center (TWAAC) is a rare gem! We are a nonprofit organization that believes all children—no mater what their obstacles—should have the opportunity to experience the water in a fun, safe, positive environment.
Our instructors are highly trained and dedicated to ensuring water safety, building water confidence, and fostering a lifelong love of swimming. They all hold Children With Challenges certifications and love the particular joy that only comes from working with our wonderful swimmers and being a part of the Adaptive program.
We build confidence by helping non-swimmers confront fear head-on and by encouraging emerging swimmers as they learn the strokes. We are an LTP for Special Olympics and are diligently working toward becoming a part of the Adapt2Acheive program for Disabled Sports USA, as well as Autism Speaks.
HOW DOES ADAPTIVE WORK?
Participants sign up for an 8-week Session and swim once per week in the day/time slot of your choice at one of several locations.
New Adaptive swimmers are asked to sign up for our 20-minute private (one-on-one) lessons to learn water safety and beginner swimming skills.
Proficient/watersafe swimmers are asked to join our swim team (30-minute practice) to receive stroke mechanics instruction in a small-group setting. Our team members also have the opportunity to compete in adaptive meets!
WHO QUALIFIES FOR ADAPTIVE?
To qualify for Adaptive, swimmers must have at least one special-needs diagnosis (generally accompanied by an IEP or 504 plan).* We serve children with a variety of special needs, including (but not limited to):
- Asperger Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Childhood Disintegrative Disorders
- Down Syndrome
- Head Trauma
- Hearing Impairments
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Oppositional Defiance Disorder
- Rett Syndrome
- Sensory Processing Disorders
- Speech Impairments
- Spina Bifida
- Stroke Complications
Knowing each child's specific challenge(s) allows us to tailor our instruction to that swimmer’s individual strengths, needs, and limitations. * We do not require hard-copy medical documentation, but you'll be asked to list your child's diagnosis when you register.
