Thanks for checking out Tide Water Swim School!

Everything you need to know about our Lesson Programincluding Lesson descriptions, Set dates, Lesson schedules,
registration information, FAQs, and so much more
can all be found right here!
We invite you to take a moment to learn all about us.

Goal: Our aim at Tide Water Swim School is to offer a fun, safe environment for a positive, productive swimming experience. We help non-swimmers confront fear head-on and encourage emerging swimmers to build confidence and technique with our step-by-step instruction.

OfferingsBelow is a quick overview. Please see the Types of Lessons and Additional Lesson Options section for more info about each.

  • Private Lessons - 20 minutes of one-on-one instruction
  • Group Lessons - 30 or 45 minutes of instruction (length varies by Level) with a small group of children of similar age and ability level
  • Aquatic Therapeutic Exercise - 30-minute sessions
  • Bullet Lessons - 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction in either:
    • stroke mechanics
    • or adult learn-to-swim

Instruction: Our instructors are a mix of graduate and undergraduate personnel who provide a positive learning experience and foster a love of the water and of the sport in children of all ages. We offer homogenized Group Lesson classes at different skill levels to guide children through the progressions of learning how to swim. Our beginner Group Lessons focus on water safety, using a blend of survival techniques and core-based swimming; while our intermediate and advanced Groups focus on proper swimming mechanics to help children become stronger swimmers and potentially prepare them to join our Swim Team. We also offer Private (one-on-one) Lessons that meet each swimmer's individual ability level and swimming instruction goalseither water safety or mechanics.

Group Lesson Class Size:

  • Squirts & Softshells - maximum of 6 swimmer/parent pairs per instructor
  • Level 1 - maximum 4-to-1 swimmer-to-instructor ratio, which is ideal for beginners
  • Levels 2 & 3 - usually 4:1 (occasionally higher, but never more than 6:1)
  • Level 4 - maximum of 8 swimmers (runs more like a swim team practice, so the class is larger)

We may have 2 instructors per Group* during our busiest Setswhich means more swimmers per class but smaller swimmer-to-instructor ratios. *Excludes Level 4

Location: Lessons are given at RiverWinds Community Center's Aquatic Facility in West Deptford, NJ. You are not required to be a RiverWinds member to participate in Tide Water Swim School!

Joining Swim School: You may enroll in Swim School at any time, provided we have available spotsIf all spots in our current or upcoming Set of Lessons are full, then you will need to wait until registration opens for the next Set or a spot opens up due to a cancellation. We do not have a waiting list because all swimmers (new and current/returning) must register for each new Set. Please ask to be put on our contact list to receive the upcoming Set's enrollment information and links on the day that registration opens.

Availability: Openings change constantly as swimmers enroll, so we are unable to tell you which time slots are available at any given time. The registration website will show you an up-to-the-second listing of available spots.

Starting LessonsAll swimmers must registersign a waiver, and pay before receiving Lessons. For liability reasons, we cannot offer a "trial" Lesson to anyone who has not registered and signed the required waiver. Similarly, we do not test swimmers to determine their Level prior to registration. (Please use the outlined eligibility requirements for each Level of Group Lessons as your guideline for choosing a class.)

2017-2018 LESSON Prices

Registration Basics

You must register for an entire SET. Our Sets are broken down into Sessions simply so that people can opt to pay in installments.

The only exception to full-Set registration is if we still have spots available for a specific Session (or Sessions) once a Set is already underway. Please note that single-Session registration is rare.

When registration for an upcoming Set opens, all spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Current swimmers do not carry their spots from one Set to the next; everyone must register for each new Set.)

We cannot reserve spots for anyone. A spot is not yours until you have registered and paid for it online.

Registration remains open until all of our spots are full. However, we tend to sell out EXTREMELY quicklyespecially Private Lessons and Squirts classes. So we encourage you to enroll as soon as registration for a given Set opens!

dult Learn-to-Swim Instruction

Do I need to be a RiverWinds member?

No, you do not need to be a member of RiverWinds to participate in Tide Water Swim School.

How do I register

You must register online. Please email us to receive the enrollment email (including registration directions/info and the enrollment links).

Do I have to sign up for a full Set?

Yes, you are required to register for the full Set. However, if you decide not to return after the first (or second) Session of a Set, then please notify us after you register or at least one week prior to the conclusion of the SessionAll cancellations must be requested in writing via twaclessons@gmail.com.

example: If you are not coming back for the Fall Two Session, then you must notify us no later than the third week of Fall One.

The only exception to our full-Set registration policy is IF we have open spots available once a Set is underway, which is rare.

What is the difference between a Set and Sessions

Set is a block of Lessons purchased together. We run four Sets per year. Each Set is then broken down into two or three 4-week Sessions so that people can pay in installments or cancel* without penalty. (*Please see the TWAC Policies section for more details on cancelling your registration.)

If you have to register for the entire Set, then why are Sets broken down into Sessions

A Set is broken down into Sessions simply so that participants can opt to pay in installments (if they wish).

How many weeks does each Set last?

The length of a Set depends on the time of year, as well as instructor and pool availability. For the 2016-17 Season: the Fall and Winter Sets are both 12 weeks long, the Spring Set runs for 6 weeks, and the Summer Set lasts 8 weeks.

Do you offer flexible scheduling so that I can come on a different day/at a different time each week?

Sorry, we are unable to accommodate flexible scheduling. You must sign up for one of the specific day/time slots being offered (much like registering for an academic class or setting a doctor's appointment) and attend that same day/time each week.

Do I have to pay for the full Set all at once?

Although you must register for the full Set, you are NOT required to pay for it all upfront (with the exception of the 2017 Spring Set). You can choose pay in full or recurring payments. If you opt for recurring payments, then your first installment is due at the time of registration. The remaining monthly installment(s) will be pulled via auto-pay.

What payment types do you accept?
Registration payments are made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) or e-check at the time of registration. We do not accept cash or check.

Can I get a discount if I register more than one of my children?
Sorry, we do not offer a multi-child or family discount.

Do RiverWinds members receive a discount on TWAC Lessons?
No. TWAC and RiverWinds are separate companies. So TWAC Lesson prices are the same for both RiverWinds members and non-members.

At what age can my child start Lessons?
Squirts (Baby Class) participants can be as young as 6 months. Children must be at least 2 years old to start Private Lessons. Leveled Group Lessons start at age 3, provided that the child is watersafe.

What does it mean to be watersafe?
A watersafe swimmer is: 1.) able to stay afloat independently (i.e., without the use of a flotation device of any kind); 2.) able to surface unassisted after jumping or falling into the water; and 3.) unafraid of being in the water on his/her own.

If these are learn-to-swim lessons, then why does my child need to be watersafe to be in Group Lessons?
Participants must be watersafe to be in Group Lessons for safety reasons. Group Lessons have more than one swimmer per instructor. So if we have multiple non-watersafe swimmers in a class with only one instructor, then we run the risk of one swimmer going under while the instructor is working with another swimmer. For that reason, Private Lessons are used to teach water safety. And Group Lessons teach stroke mechanics.

Can my child wear a flotation device?
No. Swimmers are not permitted to wear flotation devices of any kind (floaties, swimmies, water wings, puddle jumpers, life vests, etc.). That defeats the purpose of the Lessons
which is to learn how to swim independently and with proper technique/mechanics. Your child's instructor will ensure that your child stays afloat until s/he can do it independently.

Can my child participate if s/he is not potty-trained?
Squirts and Private Lesson swimmers are not required to be potty-trained*. Leveled Group Lesson (Green Turtles, Loggerheads, Leatherbacks, Terrapins, and Pre-Team) swimmers are required be potty-trained. *Swimmers who are not potty-trained must wear swim diapers.

Do parents get in the water for Lessons?

No. Parents are asked to watch from the pool deck. The only exception is Squirts, in which case a parent is required to be in the water (because it is a baby/parent class)Also, we respectfully ask you not to interject during Lessons because that tends to distract the swimmers, as well as make them more nervous.

What Level do I choose if my child is too old for Squirts but not yet old enough and/or does not meet the skill requirements for Green Turtles (Level 1)?
Swimmers 30-36 months (2.5 years to 3rd birthday), as well as those who are over age 3 but not yet watersafe, MUST take Private Lessons.

How do I know which Level to put my child in for Group Lessons?
The Group Lesson Level Description and Eligibility Requirements section outlines the age range and prerequisite skills for each Level. Please adhere to these guidelines so that everyone gets the most out of their Lesson experience. Thanks!

How will I know if my child is ready to transition to the next Level?
The instructor will give you a recommendation when your child is ready to transition to the next Level. (We also try to issue mid-Set Progress Reports and/or end-of-Set Report Cards.) If you want to know where your child should be placed for a future Session or Set, then please speak to your child's instructor prior to registration. Please do not transition your swimmer up a Level until his/her instructor approves it.

Can my two (or more) kids be in the same class?
Yes, provided that they meet the age and ability requirements for the same Level and we have the space available in the class you would like to attend.

What if my child is upset during the Lesson?
If you have a beginner—of any age, but especially under 6 years oldthen expect reluctance. We have been effectively dealing with all levels of resistance for many years. The younger the child is, the more he or she depends on fussing to get a point across. We'll work with that. Your child may fuss about being away from you, being with a stranger, or just not wanting to do what he or she is being toldeven before the natural fear level of being in the water kicks in. For most children, this is when they'll learn that you sometimes do things even if you don't want to. And they'll come out of it stronger, more self-confident, andmost importantlysafer than when they began.

What if my child doesn't want to come back?
We encourage your child to stick it out. Drowning is the second leading cause of childhood accidental death for children under the age of 14. Participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88%. Whether or not you plan to head to the pool, water is all around usin rivers, lakes, drainage ditches, and even large puddles. Equip your child with this life skill, and you'll also be giving him/her access to all the fun and fitness the water can provide! It is absolutely normal for this to be harder on a parent than the children that we're empowering. But know that it won't be easier next yearevery year older without becoming water-safe increases the resistance and fear level. So stick with it! You'll be glad you didand possibly prevent an unspeakable loss.

Can my child do a "trial Lesson" first to see if s/he likes it?
No. F
or liability reasons, prospective Swim School students cannot get in the water until they have registered and signed a waiver.

Can we come on a different day one week if we can't make it on our regular Lesson day that week?
No. We do not allow swimmers to come on a different day because then they would be taking other swimmers' spots.

Can I make up the missed Lesson if my child can't make his/her Lesson due to illness, vacation, etc.?
It depends on the type of Lesson your child is taking. Please see our Missed Lessons and Makeup Policy for details.

Will my Lesson time be extended if I arrive late?
No. All Lessons start and end on time. Otherwise, you would be cutting into another swimmer's Lesson spot.

Do you have a phone number, or can someone call me about Swim School?
We're very happy to answer your questions and/or help with any problems you may have! However, all Swim School communication is done via email. That way, everyone has a written record of the information discussed and can refer to it later.

Can I purchase a gift certificate for Lessons?
Unfortunately, no. While we believe swim lessons make an amazing gift, the setup of the registration site prevents purchases prior to registration. So we are unable to offer gift certificates. Sorry!

I've read everything, but I still have questions. Who can I contact?
Please email Megan at TWACLessons@gmail.com. Every effort is made to answer your inquiries in a timely manner; you can generally expect a reply in 3 business days or less.

We also try to send out emails to any families affected by weather closings; however, Facebook is the definitive source for TWAC cancellations/RiverWinds closing infoThe TWAC page is public, so you can still access it even if you are not on Facebook. Go to: https://www.facebook.com/Tide-Water-Aquatics-Club-133120093514089/

Want to know if Lessons are cancelled due to inclement weather?

Facebook is the definitive source for Lesson cancellations/pool closing info. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL or CALL TWAC and/or RIVERWINDS to ASK IF LESSONS ARE CANCELLED. Instead, please visit https://www.facebook.com/tidewaterswimschool to view all Lesson cancellations/updates in the event of inclement weather. Thank you!

Can you get a refund/credit or make up a Lesson if there's an emergency or weather-related pool closing?

Unfortunately, TWAC is unable to provide Makeups, refunds, or credits for Lessons missed due to these kinds of emergency pool closingsWe apologize for any inconvenience. For full information, please see our Pool Closing/Cancelled Lessons Policy in the TWAC Policies section below.

- Forget what day/time slot you signed up for or need to check on a payment?

You can check the status of your Active ordersincluding verifying Lesson day/time, instructor name, payments, etc.via Active's Swim Portal: https://swimportal.active.com?a=284065624To log in, you will need the email address you used when you registered and your Active password.

- Does your spot carry over from one Set to the next?

No. Everyone must register anew because our schedule of Lesson offerings changes from one Set to another.

What if you want to cancel or will not be returning?

Because everyone is required to register for each new Set, no cancellation notice is required if you will not be returning for an upcoming Set. example: If you swam in the Fall Set but will not be coming back for the Winter Set, then you do not need to submit a cancellation notice. All other cancellationsin the middle of a Session (e.g., you came to the first week of Fall One but do not want to return) and between Sessions (e.g., you are finishing Winter Two but not returning for Winter Three)require a cancellation notice in writingFor full details, please see our Cancellation Policy in the TWAC Policies section below.

- What happens if you miss a Lesson due to illness, emergency, etc.?

We cannot provide a refund or credit for missed Lessons. However, Makeup Lessons are available in some situations. For complete details, please see our Pool Closing/Cancelled Lessons Policy in the TWAC Policies section below.

Cancellation Policy

You do not need to provide a cancellation notice between Sets.

If you choose to cancel between Sessions (e.g., between Winter One and Winter Two), then you are required to give written notice at least 1 week prior to the end of your Session by emailing twaclessons@gmail.com.

Please note: If we do not receive your written cancellation prior to the start of the next Session, then you will be held financially responsible for your spot and it will be released to other swimmers.

No refunds or credits of any kind will be given if you chose to quit in the middle of a Session (e.g., in week 2 of Winter One), and your spot will be released.

Pool Closing/Cancelled Lessons Policy

TWAC makes every effort to give all Lessons as scheduled. However, from time to time, RiverWinds unexpectedly closes their facility due to circumstances beyond TWAC's control. Examples of this include (but are not limited to) inclement weather (snow, thunderstorms*, etc.); power failure; health/safety risk; emergency repair; etc.

Unfortunately, TWAC is unable to provide Makeups, refunds, or credits for Lessons missed due to these kinds of emergency pool closingsWe apologize for any inconvenience.

We try our best to send an email when Lessons need to be cancelled due to snow or other pool closing. However, that isn't always possible. Similarly, we cannot guarantee that you will receive a timely answer if you email us to ask if Lessons are cancelled. Therefore, please do not email or call TWAC (or RiverWinds) to see if Lessons are cancelledInstead, please check TWAC's Facebook page**, https://www.facebook.com/tidewaterswimschool, for TWAC Lessons cancellation information.

*RiverWinds is required by law to close their aquatic facility during thunder/lightning storms because the pool is not grounded. (In the event that the facility was struck by lightning, anyone in the pool would be a conduit to the ground and could be seriously, or even fatally, injured.)

**TWAC's page is public, so you can still access it even if you are not on Facebook.

Missed Lessons and Makeup Policy

We understand that absences cannot always be avoided. Please be considerate of your child(ren)’s instructor’s time by emailing twaclessons@gmail.com to inform us in advance when you are unable to make your child(ren)'s scheduled Lesson due to accident/illness, family emergency, vacation, one-time schedule conflict, etc. Thank you!

We cannot provide a refund or credit for missed Lessons. However, Makeup Lessons are given on the following basis:

Group Lessons: For our swimmers’ safety, we maintain specific instructor-to-swimmer ratios in our Group classes. Allowing Group Lesson Makeups (in which a swimmer attends a class on a different day) would upset those ratios. Therefore, we are unable to provide Group Lesson Makeups for any reason. Sorry! Thank you for your understanding and your contribution to keeping our swimmers safe!

Private Lessons: We offer several designated Private Lesson Makeup Days at the end of each Set. A Private Lesson Makeup on one of those days is available by request only once the Set is underway. Please email twaclessons@gmail.com to request the Private Lesson Makeups signup link.

  • Regardless of the number of Private Lessons a swimmer misses, s/he may sign up for only ONE Private Lesson Makeup for the entire Set. If a swimmer signs up for more than 1 spot, then s/he will not get the Makeup.
  • We cannot give you a specific instructor for your Private Lesson Makeup or guarantee that a Private Lesson Makeup spot will be available on the same day/at the same time as your regularly-scheduled Lessons.
  • You cannot sign up for a Private Lesson Makeup for a day missed due to inclement weather/emergency pool closing. (Please see our Pool Closing/Cancelled Lessons Policy.)
